JOPLIN -- School resource officers say when it comes to someone that may be dangerous to themselves or to others, there are several things you can watch out for. One change is if a person tat was very outgoing suddenly starts to distance themselves from others. Another warning sign is a person who suddenly develops an interest in guns or violence. Officers say noticing these changes early and telling someone who can intervene could help stop a tragedy.

"With the system the school has, we catch it so early that we're able to help that child or help that family get figured out," says Joplin R-8 school resource officer Rick Hirshey. "Whatever their problem was, we see what we can do to fix it and a lot of times it's usually stuff that's pretty easily fixed."
