CARTHAGE -- Carthage police officers hosted the annual "Laverne Williams Children's Christmas Gathering" Saturday. The tradition started 30 years ago when officer Williams purchased bikes for 13 area kids for the holidays. This year the event provided a special Christmas for 850 children whose parents may be going through difficult financial times. Toys and bikes were raffled off throughout the morning, while each child received a stuffed animal. Organizers say the party is something the officers look forward to all year.
"This is a time of year when our main goal is to provide a great opportunity for the children to have a great Christmas party, and have a fun day of celebration, and that's easily accomplished on a day like this," says Cpt. Randee Kaiser with the Carthage Police Department.
Officers sa the event would not be possible without the generous donations of the public during the year.
