CARL JUNCTION -- McGruff the crime dog stopped by Ozark Hearth and Home, just off main street in Carl Junction Saturday to raise funds for Heartland Crime Stoppers. Children got to mee the famous crime-stopping dog, while parents shopped from the store's unique gifts. Twenty percent of Saturday's sales went to help support the Crime Stoppers. Coordinators say fundraisers like this are the only way the tip-line receives funding.

A call center that takes the calls, we have to pay an annual fee for that," says Heartland Crime Stopers coordinator Paula Bone. "We also have a software system and there's an annual fee for that. We also have our websites and all of that. So we have to maintain all those."

Heartland Crime Stoppers is a citizen-run tip-line and needs about $20,000 a year to stay up and running. If you would like to donate, make checks payable to Heartland Crime Stoppers, and mail it to PO box 715; Joplin, MO 64802.
