CARL JUNCTION, MO--- A Carl Junction Junior High Student rode to school with a BB gun in his backpack, but didn't make it into the building. Police were tipped off to the possibility via Facebook, and met the student at the bus drop off before school began. Carl Junction Police confiscated the weapon and delivered the student to juvenile authorities.
This incident closely follows threats made by a high school student on Wednesday. Administrators say the student made threats of a planned attack on the school. That student is also in juvenile custody.
Carl Junction Police Chief Delmar Haase says, " I think they are completely unrelated, I think everybody is a a heightened sensitivity right now because of the Connecticut situation, and if there's any questions, we want to certainly be notified so that we can make sure things are taken care of."
Carl Junction School Superintendent Dr. Philip Cook says, "This morning we sent out another message to all of our parents in the district to let everyone know what had happened and to let them know that all of our schools are safe."
Carl Junction Police have since increased their presence at each building throughout the district. They have one officer stationed at the high school, one at the junior high, and two at the elementary school. In addition to extra security, there are existing school resource officers already stationed in each building.
