JOPLIN, MO.--- The study by the University of Missouri claims a lack of sales tax on internet sales costs the state millions of dollars a year. Local elected officials say sales tax is a large part of county budgets, and increased revenue could mean more services offered by the county. However, they would like to see the issue decided by those that would pay taxes on online purchases.
"I think the voters should decide that issue. I believe, in the State of Missouri they would tell you what you could gain, and how you're going to spend the money, if you get it," states Marilyn Ruestman, Newton County Commissioner.
State law makers say the issue could be addressed in the upcoming legislative session.
