PITTSBURG -- For the fiscal year that runs through the end of next June, Kansas law makers say the state is roughly $300 million short, and for the following year the budget is nearly $900 million short. Governor Sam Brownback has vowed not to cut money from education or health care, which make up about 90% of the state budget. Party leaders from both sides will have to come together to make up the budget deficit over the next two years.

"When we convene in January and deal with the state budget for the next fiscal year, we're going to have to make some very, very steep cuts, because revenues have really dried up," says state house minority leader Paul Davis.

The 2013 Kansas legislative session begins on January 14.
