Commissioner's Debt Questions

By: Import User
Updated: January 7, 2009
As we reported earlier, two county commissioners owe $33,000. The question now is, should they have to pay the entire amount? Jasper County Commissioner Anna Ruth Crampton and former Commissioner Ben Johnson are being told to give back their full raises. But Crampton says the two never received $33,000 because money was withheld by the state. Today she presented a check for $22,000 to the county. County officials are taking her offer into advisement and will decide if they will sue Crampton for the remaining $11,000 amount. The county is expected to decide if a lawsuit is necessary next week. Former Commissioner Ben Johnson has not paid anything back to the county yet.
