JOPLIN, MO.--- The Missouri Department of Conservation say you can use your old Christmas tree to benefit the birds, fish, and landscape. You can surround your landscaping with old Christmas tree branches. That will provide extra insulation for your trees and shrubs.
Surrounding bird feeders with leftover boughs, keeps birds warm and protects them from predators. Old Christmas trees can also benefit fish.

"Find a friend that has a pond or use your pond, and sink your Christmas trees with all the decorations removed at the edge of the pond, or at the center," states Cyndi Cobill, Public Service Assistant. "Maybe even tying a cinder block to it to make it go down farther."
Cobill says Joplin residents can also drop trees of at 3 designated locations in Joplin through January 31st. Those drop off sites include Humphrey Park on Utica Street in the Royal Heights area, Mcindoe Park at Glendale Road and Jackson Avenue, and the Joplin Public Works Center.
