JOPLIN, MO.--- 2013 means the end of the over the counter driver license system that has been in place since the 1990's. Once the new system takes effect, licenses will be issued through the mail only.

Also, drivers licenses and state id cards for people under 18 will have a new vertical design to replace the current horizontal layout. License office officials say the new design elements will be a lot safer for everyone.

"I think for under 21 it will be safer because you will see that difference in the license, so you will automatically know that they are not 21 and also the safety features will be different," states Karri Garret, Clerk, Joplin License Office.

The new license includes security features such as a laser perforation and special printing that reacts to UV light. Officials at the Joplin License Office expect to get new equipment necessary to start processing new license applications sometime this Spring.
