COMMERCE, OK.--- The Insurance Services Office gave the Commerce Fire Department a better rating for upgraded equipment and training. This will lower the yearly insurance rates for homeowners.

The exact amount of savings will vary depending on the individual insurance carrier. The new insurance rates apply to those who live within 5 miles of the Commerce Fire Department

All residents outside of the Commerce city limits will now have to pay a flat fee of $75 per year, which will include up to 3 fire runs.  If they don't, they will receive a bill every time firefighters respond to their property for fire calls.

Up until now, only residents within the city limits have paid for fire protection through taxes. The fee was created to offset department costs and provide better service.

"I want people to understand that I don't just want their money, there's a reason behind the madness. I hope to save them more money than what they'll ever pay us. That's my goal," Al Cervantes, Commerce Fire Chief.

All homeowners in the fire district will receive a letter from the fire department within the next few days. The fire department will also be able to bill insurance companies.
