JOPLIN, MO.--- January is Radon Action Month. Radon is a radioactive, invisible, and odorless gas released from the normal decay of rocks and soil. The National Cancer Institute says lung cancer from radon exposure claims 15 to 22,000 lives each year.

While the natural gas is in the air we breathe everyday, it can seep into your home and potentially reach toxic levels. Experts say it's best to test for radon every 6 months. Home improvement stores have home testing kits.

"The problem is, it seeps through cracks in the basement, sump pumps, also it will just seep through anything that it can get through, especially in basements. Basements is where you have to do your checking," says Eldon Howery, Lowe's Radon Test Kit Expert.

Officials from the EPA estimate one in 15 homes has a dangerous level of radon.
