JOPLIN ---- Fourth grade teacher Emily Mullins wasn't always grabbing the Lysol can this much.

"Maybe just once sometimes I would skip it," Mullins says.

Now she's using it more.

"I do it when they leave and go to their special classes I do lysoling and when they're at lunch and then at the end of the day," she says.

Her students have been doing extra cleaning too.

"We randomly put Germ-X on our hands even just a few times throughout the day and they're responsible for wiping down tables and keeping the supplies," she says.

The cleaning at Royal Heights continues beyond the classroom.

Building Engineer David Mitchell spends more time wiping up during the flu season.

"We have redoubled our efforts as far as spraying the water fountains, bathrooms, all handles, door handles, chair backs tables," he says.

He targets areas germs can flock the most.

"They touch everything so we're just trying to catch it before it gets any worse," he says.

Carl Junction Schools are also doing their part to prevent the spread of the flu.

"Isolating the children when they're ill at school. Keeping them in the office until they're picked up. encouraging parents to keep them at home. all that will prevent the spread of the illness," Stacey Whitney, lead district nurse, says.

All these measures are also to protect the teachers.

Something especially important for Mullins since she has a little one on the way.

"Well I'm pregnant and I don't want to get sick so I'm making sure I'm keeping myself and all of the students healthy as well," she says.

Teachers at Royal Heights say parents have been bringing in Germ-X and cleaning spray. They say parents are donating more than they have before.
