PITTSBURG, KS.--- Kansas Governor Sam Brownback main focus was the state's budget and education system today during his state address. Right now, 29% of Kansas 4th graders cannot read on a basic level. Brownback announced his "Kansas Reads To Succeed" initiative. It will provide $12 million to help students learn to read.

"Passing children up the grade ladder when we know they can't read is irresponsible and it's cruel. We can and we must do better by our children," says Sam Brownback, Kansas Governor.

The governor also revealed he will release a 2 year budget proposal. It will include the 2014 and 2015 fiscal year budgets. They should include funding to educate 50 additional medical doctors at KU Medical Center and a new crime lab at Washburn University.
