QUAPAW, OK.--- Umicore Optical Materials USA in Quapaw laid off 34 of its 137 employees today. The company's human resource director says management notified each worker this morning.

All employees were offered severance packages. Representatives say Umicore cut back hours during the summer to avoid the job cuts but the shift changes weren't enough.

The lay offs come after a lowered demand in optical lenses used to produce renewable energy. Human resource heads say they recognize the impact of the job cuts but say it's a necessary move for the business.
