NEVADA, MO.--- Deputy Greg Prough is gearing up for his new position at the Vernon County Courthouse.

"It's going to entail court security inside the courthouse and on the courthouse grounds, be setting through all the court cases," states Greg Prough, Vernon County Sheriff's Deputy.

Right now, a deputy only works in the building when court is in session. Prough's new job as full-time court security will change that.

"There's some line items we've added to the budget this year we've not had in the past. Security cameras, installing the metal detectors, and having someone present in the courthouse during court days," states Deputy Prough.

Vernon County commissioners approved these line items as part of the sheriff's 2013 budget. The commission was aware of the sheriff's concern for security at the courthouse.

"If the judges need protection or county employees need protection, the citizens that come before the court system will have security in the courthouse to help," states Bonnie McCord, Presiding Commissioner.

Deputy Prough will have help monitoring safety throughout the building. The county plans to install a metal detector on the 3rd floor. Future plans will also be to install security cameras in the building, making it easier for Prough to do his job.

"I will be able to monitor all the floors that the cameras are on by one place on my computer screen," states Deputy Prough.

Deputy Prough will begin his duties on Monday. The new position will take about $20,000 out of the sheriff's expenses for the year. The sheriff says he was able to cut other costs to allow for this new position.
