JOPLIN, MO.--- Earlier this month, Joplin City Council members voted to approve a Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery Grant only if the "15th Street viaduct" was removed from plans. That decision came after local business owners objected to the overpass. City leaders thought this might prevent them from getting the grant.

City staff found out this week they will receive all the funds and will have to rewrite the paperwork with the changes. The $1.2 million set aside for the 15th Street project will now be used for other construction. $250,000 will go to build sidewalks along the 20th Street overpass. The rest will go towards the widening of Maiden Lane.

"We have to finish that grant. We're bantering back and forth between Federal Highway and ourselves to make sure we get the grant agreement correct. Then we'll take that grant agreement to council for their approval," says Jack Schaller, Assistant Public Works Director.

City leaders are expected to vote on the revised T.I.G.E.R. grant at the council meeting on February 18th.
