MISSOURI.--- Missouri legislators have filed 2 separate bills that would abolish the death penalty as a sentencing option in the state. A 3rd bill would require a study of the cost of a death penalty case compared with the price tag for a lifetime sentence.

Jasper County Prosecutor Dean Dankelson says similar bills have been defeated in past years, and he's doubtful the effort will be successful in 2013. "The one that has a different wrinkle this year is the cost benefit analysis. Senator Keaveney, out of Kansas City, has proposed that bill."

If approved, the cost comparison would be done by the state auditor for completion by June 2015.
