BAXTER SPRINGS, KS.--- School leaders in Baxter Springs have their eyes on the future as ground is broken on their newest addition. The project will expand the high school and connect it to the brand new 7th and 8th grade middle school. The expansion is part of an $8 million bond issue.

Baxter Springs Superintendent Dennis Burke says the addition is necessary to accommodate and attract growth in the city."We have gone to about 100 students from about a year ago, and while that doesn't seem like a lot, our growth has been steady through those years and with technology and some of the new programming we need to do, we just felt it was a good time to try to get our schools ready for the future."

The bond issue will also help pay for improvements at Lincoln and Central elementary schools. It will also cover the cost of building FEMA safe rooms at the schools.
