WEBB CITY -- From 1901 to 1916, 17 Carnegie libraries were built throughout the four states, including the current Webb City library. Businessman Andrew Carnegie personally provided the funds to build the facilities, many of which were built in rural towns throughout the nation. To receive the money for a Carnegie Library, a community first had to demonstrate a need for a library, then pledge to support it once it was constructed. While some, like the Joplin Carnegie Library, have not been used in decades, many still continue to serve their communities. The facility in Webb City, along with the Pittsburg Carnegie Library, have both undergone renovations in years past, enabling them to continue serving their communities for decades to come.
