NEOSHO - Nearly 70 students from area high schools went head to head in the annual SKILLS USA Southwest District competition.

They worked in groups focusing on specific trade areas like computer programming, nurse assisting, and web design.

SKILLS USA is a national organization that promotes student training in technical, skilled, and service occupations. Group leaders say competitions like this are a great way to prepare for the future.

"It''s good to participate in something like this because we get to learn a skill that we normal wouldn't in high school," says Nick Toltin, Neosho SKILLS USA Chapter President. "So we actually can go into our field after and then we get our leadership up to where we can actually go into the workforce," Toltin adds.

A panel of judges will pick the top two or three students in each category. The winners will qualify for the state SKILLS USA competition that will be held in the spring.
