JOPLIN, MO.---- Carthage students went to work as part of National High School Technology Day. They spent the day job shadowing at the AT&T Call Center to get a first hand look at different careers in technology.

This initiative was started by "Hacemos," an AT&T employee foundation that's designed to generate interest and provide scholarships to Hispanic students and other minority groups who are historically underrepresented in math, technology, and science careers. Organizers say they hope students leave inspired by today's educational lessons.

"The reason we are having that is so we can give them some encouragement, and show them real life examples of people that have gone through a rough road, but still have been able to have a huge outcome and great success with it," says Steve Elliott, President, Joplin Hacemos Chapter.

"It kind of helps out because we have the opportunity to help others, too. Talk to other people about what we do and how we communicate with everyone else," says Genesis Chaves, Carthage High School Student.

The students also got to participate in an interactive group lesson about the dangers of texting and driving.
