GALENA, KS.--- The Kansas Department of Transportation is investigating a sinkhole in Galena. Crew members were notified by the Galena City Police Department that a sinkhole had developed near the shoulder on 7th Street. Geology crew members were drilling 40 feet deep into the ground throughout the day, trying to determine the cause of the hole. It's 12 feet wide and 14 feet deep.

KDOT Engineer George Dockery says based on his experience, the sinkhole will most likely remain confined to the size it currently is."It could go deeper, but as far as getting bigger, they don't really expect that to happen. So I don't think there's any immediate danger to the buildings or to the property on either side."

He adds if they don't find a reason to link the hole to a mining shaft, they will start filling the hole tomorrow morning around 8.
