JOPLIN, MO.--- Home school students throughout the four states are getting out of their element, and into nature.
"Wildcat Glades Conservation and Audubon Center is hosting our very first Flying Wild Workshop. We have joined with Flying Wild, which is a national program to help teach people more about birds and bird conservation," states Chris Pistole, Education Director.
This workshop targets a significant group of population that so many times gets overlooked.
"A lot of the workshops are geared towards in-service teachers and professional educators, but we know that there are a lot of home school educators in the area and we definitely want to reach out to them as well," says Pistole.
Throughout the day, the kids and their parents attended both joint and separate workshops focusing on a variety of different topics.
"We talked a little about identification as far as the different birds and the different type of beaks and what they might use them for, and environments that they may live in," states Erin Miller, Mother, Home School Teacher.
The day concluded with a special bird trapping session where kids caught wild birds using a net and bird calls, tagged them, then re-released the birds back into the environment.
"It's great that they are offering this, and we really appreciate it. I just like to sometimes have somebody else giving the kids some information other than mom always telling them something," says Miller.
Nearly 50 people attended today's Flying Wild Workshop, it's something Wildcat Glades officials hope to make an annual event.
