JOPLIN, MO.--- The Joplin Globe's 34th Annual Spelling Bee Contest had parents on the edge of their seat and students continuously on their toes. About 100 grade school kids participated in today's spelling bee at Central Christian Center.

Students had to learn a 2,500 words list for the event. The bee's spelling master believes the event is like any other game, competitive and fun, but spelling is a peculiar skill.

"There are lots of smart people who don't spell well, but the people who spell well have a valuable and fruitful kind of intelligence, and it usually promises great academic success," said Dr. Lanny Ackiss, Spelling Master.

The winner of today's spelling bee was Jaden Gallagher, a 5th grader from Nevada.
