JOPLIN, MO--- The first steel column was put in at the Joplin High School construction site at 7:16 am. It's the first of several hundred support beams needed to build the new high school. Sixteen other columns connected by beams will be put in place today. They'll serve as the back bone for one of five wings which will make up the new high school. School officials say it's a momentous day.

Joplin Schools Superintendent Dr. CJ Huff says, " In a lot of ways it's our own personal moon walk. I don't know if it has ever been done before, any schools any where in the country as far as the rebuild effort and the very strategic way we've gotten where we are today."

Field Manager Brett Yount says, "We'll start moving toward the south and then behind me, you see some work going on for the other footings that will be extending to the north. So it will be continuing progress from this point on with structural steel."

Trench work and some utilities have already been put in place. Construction is planned to be completed by August 2014.
