Joplin Fire Rope Team Training

By: Jessica Schaer
Updated: March 20, 2013

CARL JUNCTION --- About 12 members of the city's Rope Rescue Team were out in an open field in Carl Junction brushing up on their skills. They are a special group of 22 fire fighters who use ropes to maneuver down hills in case of fallen hikers and other similar emergencies. Calls for that type of rescue come in about 10 to 15 times per year. Members of the team say keeping their rope rescue skills sharp prepares them for actual emergencies.

"Because what you're looking here is a low-frequency, high hazard type training. And you need to have as much training in those areas so when an actual incident occurs they're ready for it," says Scott Cranford, Joplin Fire Department Training Chief

Rope Team members perform training exercises once a month.
