EPA Plans Mining Clean-Up

Years of lead and zinc mining has taken its toll on the Four States. Another local community is now on a federal list to become the site of a major cleanup operation. The Environmental Protection Agency will soon begin the cleanup of abandoned mines west of Baxter Springs, Kansas. Five mining companies that once mined the area are expected to pay the majority of the cost, estimated at between $5 and $7 million dollars. The project could take up to a year and a half to complete. The E.P.A. is also expected to continue a yard excavation project in the Baxter area. Similar work has already been completed in Galena and Ottawa County Oklahoma.
