A local mayor is censured. Monday night the Columbus, Kansas City council voted 6 to 4 to censure Mayor Bill Schaiff. The censure comes in an attempt to distance the city from any possible legal action by the city administrator. The censure resolution accuses Schaiff of sponsoring a petition to Fire City Administrator Mike Yanez, among other allegations. The council supported Yanez with a vote of confidence at its November meeting. Concilmember Steve Dunlap asked Schaiff at that meeting if he was involved in distributing the petition, to which the mayor responded "no comment." Dunlap told Schaiff that his involvement could place the city in the path of a lawsuit. Schaiff says the censure is a character assassination.
