A local blood supply center is asking for your help. The Community Blood Center of the Ozarks has gone from a code red blood supply to a code yellow. While code yellow is less severe, the center is still in deperate need for donations. The CBCO needs 250 to 300 units to meet the demands of the 35 area hospitals they supply. During the summer months there is an annual decline in donations due to vacations and schools out of session. CBCO Field Representative, Belinda Balk said, "Colleges and high schools give 25% of our blood supply, so when we`re in our non-academic year, which is summer, we are trying to fill the gap." When blood supplies are too low, hospitals can be forced to cancel elective surgeries. New regulations being enforced due to mad cow disease are also responsible for the drop in donations.
