Progress is being made in the effort to remove lead contaminated soil from school grounds in one four state community. Soil on 6 school properties in Miami, OK was found to contain lead content exceeding 500 hundred parts per million, a level the Environmental Protection Agency says poses a threat to humans.
That`s why the EPA and Miami school officials are working to get the soil removed and replaced before the start of school in mid-August. Miami Superintendent Bill Stephens says although high levels of lead was found in school grounds, they were pleased with the results of the lead testing. Stephens said, "We were pleased there wasn`t as much area as needed to be reclamated as we had first anticipated, so we don`t have much land to be removed." Nichols, Wilson, and Washington Elementary Schools, Will Rogers Middle School and the high school grounds all had high lead levels.
