West Nile Tires

By: Import User
Updated: January 7, 2009
A small community in Newton County has become a dumping ground for tires and residents say they`re nervous about the west nile virus spreading into their backyards. Thousands of tires have been dumped on an old tire lot near Monarch Springs. Newton County Commissioners say they`ve contacted the Department of Natural Resources about the problem. The tires are close to several residences, and health officials say the tires are infested with mosquitoes. "There are several agreements the owner has made. We have assesed the property and have put it in the hands of DNR. But the courts will handle it from here," says Jerry Carter of the Newton County Commission. Commissioners will be meeting with the Newton County Health Department on Monday to discuss a resolution to the mosquito problem. Reported by: Sarah Kyle
