Local heroes share their thoughts on an emotional trip to ground zero. Seven Joplin firefighters recently returned from a three day visit to New York City. Over the weekend they participated in a parade to honor the firefighters lost on September 11th. Fifty-thousand firemen from all across the world joined in on the ceremony. Local firefighters said crews from other cities were impressed with Joplin`s uniforms and took several pictures of them. The trip also included a visit to ground zero, where the rescue workers saw first-hand the effect of the devastating attacks. Joplin firefighter, Josh Beck says, "As soon as we got out of the subway at the world trade center, the whole mood changed it was very sobering, a lot of respect to be at ground zero." The Joplin rescue workers also toured numerous fire houses in New York. The firefighters who attended the parade said it was private citizens and company sponsorship that made their trip possible.
