A Four-State child advocacy center is reporting seeing a record number of abused children in 2002.
Workers at the Children`s Center helped 635 suspected child abuse victims in the past year. That number is almost 150 more than the previous year, but thankfully the news isn`t quite as frightening as it sounds.
Workers at the Children`s Center say although there may have been a slight increase in actual child abuse cases reported in Southwest Missouri, the numbers can be attributed to other things.
Executive Director, Greg Dagnan says, "We are proving cases have happened that we`ve never been able to prove before so as we do a better job, before those cases wouldn`t have counted because we couldn`t prove that they`d happened."
The increase in numbers can also be attributed to the opening of a new satellite office in Monett, Missouri. Workers at the Children`s Center also say an increasing number of police are seeing the Children`s Center as a better way to investigate child abuse.
