Updated: January 7, 2009
After a two and a half hour battle, a major commercial fire in the four states is under control. The blaze broke out just after threee this afternoon at the able body fiberglass plant of Joplin. The Carl Junction and Galena Fire Departments also assisted. During the fire black smoke billowed from the plant as crews tried to get it under control. Portions of 7th street from Black Cat to Schifferdecker were blocked off to traffic due to crews battling the fire. At this time there has been no reports of injuries to employees or firefighters. But residents were warned to evacuate their homes if the smoke was coming their way. "This is a fiberglass chemicals plant. So you have all that resign and everything that goes into it. And that was causing the smoke to be so think so thick. It did lay it down across 7th street and we had to deal with that also,"said Howard Reding,Joplin Fire Department. The american red cross has set up west 4th street for those that may have been effected by the hazardous smoke.
