Homeless in Joplin

Updated: January 7, 2009
The single digit temperatures can be dangerous for everyone. But people who have no place to stay are left out in the cold. Area shelters such as the Salvation Army in Joplin and Soul`s Harbor have been filled to capacity the last few days. Workers at the shelters say the demand for food is also high, with long lines of people looking for a hot meal. Officials at the Salvation Army say they have been housing close to 120 homeless people every day now that temperatures have reached freezing levels. That`s compared to about 80 residents who are normally there. And those people say staying outside just is not an option in these temperatures. "This morning about 5 o`clock it was seven degrees and you had to fight just to get out from under the covers. Cause it`s, oh my gosh, it`s uncontrollable shaking and so cold," said homeless Ryan Mills. If you would like to help the shelters. Soul`s Harbor is located at 817 South Main and the Salvation Army is located at 320 East 8th street in Joplin. Reported By: Brad Douglas
