Teacher Shortage Reaches Joplin

A nationwide problem is felt right here in the Four States. A shortage of teachers in public classrooms is at an all-time high and the effects can be seen right here at home. At the Carl Junction R-1 School District, administrators were busy filling vacated positions until mid August. Superintendent Dr. Larry Thomas admits the hardest positions to fill include math, science and foreign language courses on the secondary level, but the most difficult teaching position is that of special education. Several schools have begun including stipends with annual teaching salaries. Dr. Thomas says that option has been discussed at Carl Junction and may be explored in the future.
