Denton recommends checking the water's depth and possible underwater obstacle before you dive in. He also says it's smart to swim with a buddy. "All type of outdoor activities, it's good to know someone to help you if you get into trouble to at least travel in pairs. Someone can assist if a situation arises where you need assistance, particularly if you're in remote areas."
Denton also says it's a good idea to check bacterial levels if you're planning a trip to the creek or lake. "If you shouldn't drink it, don't swim either. The chances are you'll get some of the water in your mouth and swallow. So know the bacteria count in areas you are swimming in."
And by checking ahead of time, your summer plans can stay healthy and safe.
