breaking news
Drivers in Carthage will soon be driving in circles. The Missouri Department of Transportation is constructing a roundabout at the intersection of Route 571. The motorists enter the circle and leave it without stopping at traffic lights.
This is the first roundabout to be built by MODOT in Southwest Missouri.
"Well it`s a one lane circle. And traffic goes to the right. As you pull up to the roundabout, you yield to oncoming traffic. As long as there`s nobody coming. Then you pull out and travel around till you get to the street that you want to exit off of,"said Wendy Brunner-Lewis, MODOT.
The design will reduce speeds and decrease the opportunities for accidents. The roundabout construction should be complete by July 3rd and cost almost $800,000.
