Joplin police officials place an officer on administrative leave, after a child abduction incident yesterday.
Officials say Joplin police officer Ron Buchanan is the officer who fired shots at the white Chevy Lumina that 19-year-old Nathan Roland was driving yesterday.
Roland forced three children and their mother inside the car during a kidnapping. The mother was able to escape, but as Roland was driving away, police say he nearly backed into the children`s mother and officer Buchanan.
Buchanan shot at the suspect through the back window, while the children remained in the back seat. Police officials say only one bullet hit the windshield and another hit the driver`s door. "Our officer believed his life was in danger, not only his life but the life of the female victim when the subject is driving his car at them,"said Lt. Delmar Haase, Joplin Police Department. Buchanan is a seven year veteran of the Joplin Police Department. He will be on paid administrative leave pending further investigation of the incident.
