The Ottawa County Sheriff`s Department is using dna testing in their crime fighting.
The Ottawa County Sherriff Department can log this case under solved. The department has just recieved DNA results of a suspect in a stolen vehicle case.
According to DNA evidence, Jerry Lee Logan stole a Dodge pickup in November of 2001, wrecked it and left the vehicle abandoned. But officers found blood on the vehicle`s airbag which was then tested at the Oklahoma state bureau of DNA testing.
"There`s an enormous process that the technicians go through to draw that DNA out. Because it wasn`t a priority case with the lab. It took considerable amount of time to get the results back,"said Ottawa County Sheriff Dennnis King
The officers had to have a lot of patients with this case. They originally sent off the DNA sample in November of 2001, it wasn`t until April of this year, when they finally got the test results back, confirming the I.D. of their suspect. Detective Mike Eason cut a piece of the airbag that contained the blood and then obtained a search warrent for Jerry Logans DNA.
"I was certainly surprised with it. whenever i was informed they were going to send this off, I was probably the biggest skeptic of all. As far as getting any results. He was persistant and tenacious.it finally paid off,"said King.
A warrent has been issued for Logan`s arrest, with an anticipated charge of grand larceny. The sheriff`s department is in talks with Logan`s attorney about setting a date for the suspect to be turn over to police.
