One local county prosecutor says the money of area taxpayers is being wasted.
Sometimes finding an unbiased trial jury requires a change of venue, but each move could be costing you money. Missouri law states that a judge must grant all requests for change of venues in counties like Newton which have fewer than 75-thousand residents. But newton county Prosecuting Attorney Scott Watson says the law is being misused, meaning taxpayers are paying the price. "I`m talking about routine burglaries, routine stealings, routine possession of controlled substances which is the majority of our cases. They`re moving for no reason other than they can,"said Scott Watson, Newton County Prosecuting Attorney. Watson estimates taxpayers are spending well over 10-thousand dollars a year on change of venue cases in Newton County.
