Fraud Prevention Tips

By: Import User
Updated: January 7, 2009
Here are some tips for construction fraud prevention from the Crawford County Attorney: DO NOT: 1. Hire a contractor who solicits you. 2. Hire a contractor that uses high pressure sales tactics. (Sign the contract today or the price is going up.) 3. Hire someone who wants to use your house as a demonstration project. 4. Hire an unregistered contractor. 5. Hire a supposedly registered contractor and don`t check his registration. 6. Never agree on a handshake. Get a contract in writing and have your attorney review before signing. TO FIND A GOOD CONTRACTOR: 1. Word of mouth is the best way. Check with neighbors, co-workers, local architects, building supply stores, building inspectors, trade associations and your local banker. 2. National Association of Home Builders Remodeleers Council (www.remodelingresource.com). 3. Better Business Bureau (www.bbb.org). 4. Check for a complaint history: Kansas Attorney General Consumer Protection Divison @ 1-800-432-2310. 5. Get a copy of the contractor`s bonding company and contact them. 6. Get at least 3 bids. 7. Ask for references.
