School officials decide the fate of the start of the upcoming school year.
All but one school in Carl Junction suffered extensive damage in the recent tornadoes. And now school will be starting a little later than scheduled. Originally students were set to go back to class August 18th,but tonight school board members decided to push the date back a week to August 25th. Carl Junction school board members approved the calender change for the upcoming year. Administrators say all but the high school suffered more than 5-million dollars in the May 4th tornadoes. That`s why it`s so important to make sure the structures are safe for students when school begins. Crews have been working overtime to repair the damage, but superintendent Dr. Larry Thomas says it`s going to take an extra week to make sure all the repairs are complete. School officials originally though they may not be able to get to school before the first of August. Dr. Thomas says all but one building wil be ready in time for the August 25th start date. He says the intermediate school, which houses the 4th, 5th, and 6th grades is so badly damaged they are looking at other options. They plan to move 5 to 7 trailers onto the school property to take care of the problem.
The temporary move could take up to 3 months.
