In just a few days four state residents will light up the skies with fireworks.
But it`s important to keep safe and not have a short fuse. Mark Ford and his nephew are trying to pick out that perfect fireworks for the fourth. But they say having fun and being safe go hand in hand. "Supervision is the big thing. Make sure your parents or brother or sister or whoever close by making sure everything is going really safe,"said Ford. Now along with adult supervision, it`s important to not mix alcohol and fireworks. And never alter fireworks by blowing off two at a time.
And if you have a dud, don`t touch it.
"Never pick up duds or fireworks that dont` go off. Make sure and have a water bucket to throw those in after a safe period of time. Fire or 10 minutes of letting them just sit than throwing `em in a bucket of water,"said Mitch Randles, Joplin Fire Department. Randles says the Joplin Fire Department usually responds to 10 to 20 calls of firework-related fires a year. "Most of the accident that occurr with fireworks are due to children or adults misusing the fireworks. Shooting them at each other is a terrible idea,"said Vince Hudkins,Crazy Debbie`s Fireworks. But Mark and his nephew plan to leave the bigger fireworks to the pros. "Mostly the bigger ones should be left to the professionals. Obviously the danger factor includeded around everything,"said Ford. And be sure to have fun.
