History comes to life in the four-states. A local native american group hosted a walk down the trail of tears tonight. Some say it`s important to look back at our bad times so that history doesn`t repeat itself, That`s why the white river band of the Northern Cherokee nation hoped to re-create the trail of tears. The trail of tears began in 1837 when over 20-thousand cherokees were forced from their southeastern homes to Indian territory. The White River band of the Northern Cherokee played host to the Intervarsity Chrisitan Fellowship Group.
The event came complete with a traditional cherokee meal, stories of the time of the trail of tears, and a portrayal of a woman on the trail. Organizers say it`s important to remember what was done to native americans many years ago. And that much of it happened right here. Smith says even years later the white river band is still alive and well and wants to remember area residents about their heritage. Smith says although we can not change the past we need to know about it so history doesn`t repeat itself in the future.
