Carthage city officials say assault charges against mary bell have been deferred of prosecution. The fourth grade teacher at Columbian Elementary in Carthage was charged with misdemeanor assault of a 9 year old student in February. Carthage police Chief Dennis Veach says the incident originated as a disciplinary action. Investigators say two fourth grade students were involved in a pushing match. Bell became involved and allegedly pushed one boy back and put her hands on the throat of the other student involved. The child was not seriously injured, but did have minor bruises on the back. Carthage City Attorney David Mouton says the charges could be re-filed in a no violation aggrement. Mouton says details of that agreement will not be disclosed for nine months.
