A long time teen tradition and the purchase of a historic building gets the green light in Joplin.
During a report at last night`s city council meeting,Police Chief Kevin Lindsey said the crusing numbers are down on Main Street along with arrests and tickets during normal cruising hours. The chief says that may be due to some simple changes in law enforcement. The city had recently changed laws dealing with downtown cruisers including a citywide curfew and loitering, making penalties much stricter for violators. "We`ve come up with a good method to deal with the negative issues, we`re not out to stop cruising all together we just want to stop the negatives associated with cruising,"said Police Chief Kevin Lindsey. Also decided last night, the Newman Building will be Joplin`s new city hall. The city of Joplin will issue 6-point-7 million dollars worth of certificates of participation or COP`s as the funding source for the Newman building. That money will not only be used to buy the building but for facility improvements as well.
The city of Joplin will officially own the Newman building by the end of July.
