The last official weekend of summer is typically one of the busiest for roads and interstates. But high gas prices are keeping more would-be travelers off the road.
Gas prices have jumped fifteen cents within the last two weeks making the national average a dollar seventy-six per gallon. Rainy weather conditions are also contributing to people forfeiting their travel plans.
"Well, today it`s been very unusual because of the rain. People would come in and we`d see them go to the restroom but then they`d go right back to the car so we have been down today because of the rain,"Loraine Holz, Missouri Welcome Center. Holz says labor day typically brings in at least a thousand visitors to the travel center. She says this year, the center has only seen about one thousand for the entire holiday weekend.
