Schaiff Fined

Updated: January 7, 2009
A battery incident in a Southeast Kansas City Hall has a former Mayor paying the price. Former Columbus Mayor Bill Schaiff was sentenced yesterday for pushing a television reporter in January. He was fined two-hundred dollars and ordered to pay court costs totaling 177-dollars. Schaiff`s attorney Chris Meek asked the judge to limit the sentence to the few hours Schaiff served in jail. Cherokee County Attorney Joanna Derfelt did not recommend a sentence, but believed sentencing Schaiff to time served would simply be "a slap on the wrist." Schaiff told the judge in the case that he felt remorse over the incident, and that his dental practice in Columbus had been affected. The reporter involved was not present at tuesday`s sentencing.
