Quapaw Pet Limit

The city of Quapaw, Oklahoma has passed an ordinance banning residents from owning more than 5 dogs or cats. To say Hugh Verryman is a dog lover is an understatement. He lives in Quapaw and owns 12 dogs and 3 cats. He just recently learned that an ordinace was passed that says you can only own five animals or your going to be fined. "I can`t see that fining ya 100 dollars a dog. I just can`t see that. That just seems like to me somebody up there is trying to make some money for somebody else. I don`t thinsk it`s a right. That 100 dollar business is plumb out of the question," said Verryman. The ordinace was passed on Thursday and says you can own no more than 5 dogs or cats. Any violation will constitute a 100 dollar fine. And you have six weeks from birth to remove a new litter of dogs or cats. "I just think that fine is outrageous. And if you cant get rid of em in that length of time, then they start fining you for each one of those pups. Why there`s a lot of people that can`t do it,"said Verryman. City workers say multiple complaints of bad smells and barking led to the new ordinance. They also have plans for a new animal ordinace in the next council meeting."Currently we don`t we have an ordinance that would prohibit livestock. We`re going to adopt an ordinace at the next council meeting,"said Misty Judd, Quapaw City Clerk. Verryman says he will try to get rid of some of his dogs but he`s had trouble in the past. Verryman says he goes trhough 300 pounds of dog food a month. In order to avoid a fine, residents can apply for a kennel license. Reported By: Brad Douglas
